When your soul speaks, what does it say?
Don't worry, this is not a trick question.
When I was a kid going to Sunday school in second grade, the nuns had us will out a worksheet and one of the questions was, "Does God speak to you?" with a follow up, "What does he say?"
I instantly freaked out, thinking if God didn't speak to me I must be a bad person (Catholic guilt trip, anyone?!).
So I imagined what God would say to me, if He did speak to me.
"Does God speak to you?"
"Yes."
"What does he say?"
"Hi Jennifer, how are you?"
I mean, what else would he say haha. The nuns called me up at the end of the class, and asked me the same questions to my face, as if I was intentionally being deceptive. I stuck by my story, my imagining God having good manners in starting a conversation...
... but the experience really planted a seed in me, the question of how DO we communicate with the spiritual realm?
Whether it's God, the Universe, or the voice of your own soul, I've come to realize that the language of spirituality is ripe with imagery and symbolism.
Our dreams are a perfect example. Think Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Joseph found his freedom, and his nobility, by interpreting the symbolism of dreams.
Dreams is how God communicated with him.
Like with dreams, the symbolic is how our soul, our psyche, communicates with our conscious self.
In this sense, writing poetry is a way for the inner voice of our soul to communicate with our conscious self, to help us survive, heal, and grow.
To help us understand the meaning of our life experiences.
This month we're doing a deep dive into the language of the symbolic, and how writing poetry voices the whispers of your soul.
