the anxiety and the opportunity
Are you a creative genius? It's ok, you don't have to tell anyone your gut instinct answer.
But I hope it was "yes"
If you're like me, that yes is quickly buried in shame...
And THAT itself is a shame, because truth is we all have our own personal creative genius, it's inherent in our very humanity, if you ask me.
Humans are creative, innovative, problem solving, beauty building, meaning making creatures.
YOU too are a creative genius.
And I'd like to help you reconnect to this essential human function.
Everyday for the next 6 days, we'll delve into a key step in the creative process and explore the possibilities and breakthroughs waiting for you there.
So often creativity is about simplifying the complexities of life, creating order amidst chaos...
Just like a complex mathematical equation, when solved, has a simple truth in its answer.
The way a symphony looks like splattered ink on paper, but becomes a simple melody when performed.
The more we simplify the process, the easier it becomes to do the work. It doesn't have to be hard. You may have heard of this concept of being blocked.
Writer's block. Creative block.
Maybe you've experienced it yourself, or are experiencing it now.
It may feel like a brick wall, but it's often some form of anxiety, and each step of the creative process has it's own flavor of anxieties we have to face.
Have you heard of the iChing?
It's an ancient Chinese text, The Book Of Changes. Originally used for divination, it's also an excellent philosophical resource. One of my favorites is Wei Chi - Before Completion.
Before Completion is a state of disorder and chaos as a new order emerges.
Our work as creators is to learn to work with the energies available to us in disorder, to fashion a new order of our choosing. Of our vision.
Sometimes it's simply a matter of channeling the energy and discovering what it contains as form emerges...
Ok, I'm getting a little abstract, sorry! I love this shit!
The point being that the very anxieties that can make us feel stuck contain the vitality we need to breakthrough and create.
The steps may stay consistent every time you go through the creative process...
But each journey ends up being unique.
Let's explore what each step is, the anxieties and opportunities we're likely to face, and the tools that will help us every time we set out on the journey of creating a new project (hint: this applies to creating the lives we want to live, our relationships, and our businesses too).
Tomorrow we'll start with step one: Desire.
